BTO event huge successBTU Blood Dive & Back-to-School BBQ

The First ever Black Teamsters United Blood drive and back to school BBQ was held in the parking lot of the Rainier Beach Safeway in south Seattle on August 28 and by all accounts, it was a huge success!

We had over thirty (30) people take the time to donate blood, which ultimately will help to replenish low blood supplies currently available to people throughout our region. I'd like to thank the cascade regional blood
services for their efforts.

Black Teamsters United along with their families, including staff from Teamsters Local 174 and Teamsters Local 117, members of the community, as well as Congressman Adam Smith and Richard Mitchell, candidate for King County Council Pos. 6, donated over 500 pieces of School supplies and totaling more than $2400. We all applaud the efforts of Shirley Harris from the Salvation Army for arranging the pickup and distribution of the school supplies to needy families.

This past Saturday June 4, 2011 we had our second Black Teamsters United meeting, thanks to all those who took time on a gorgeous day to show up, especially the brother and sister that came all the way from local 839 in Pasco.

We had a spirited discussion on the struggles involved in starting a group like ours, and I was inspired by the voices dedicated to the Teamsters and to our being a success. We had a candid and open discussion on how we want Black Teamsters United to be an action orientated group, and not just meet to meetings.

Many ideas were brought forward from having a blood drive to participating in fairs this summer.

We also had the drawing for our fundraiser, 2 tickets to the Sinbad comedy show on June 11, (donated by local 117, thank you ST Tracy Thompson) and those tickets were won by Phylis Cherry, congratulation Phylis. We raised $400 (which was matched by local 174 thanks again to ST Rick Hicks the Executive Board and the membership)

We left the meeting with a homework assignment of coming up of coming up with a mission statement that conveyed our core messages or inclusion and participation from as wide a section of Teamsters as we can find here in Joint Council 28.

Please join us at our next Black Teamsters United meeting which will be held at the Teamsters hall 14675 Interurban Ave. S Tukwila WA 98168 on July 9, 2011 at 10 am. Please help us spread the word about the meeting. All are welcome.
